What ideas do you have to better the lives of Oklahoma’s children?

Oklahoma is in dire need of more rural health care. Our children in rural Oklahoma suffer everyday due to the lack of adequate health care. I will fight for more funding for rural healthcare so that our children will get the services they need. I want to introduce legislation that will require schools to have a mental health professional available for children in need. This will also require the legislature to provide for the funding needed to implement this program.

What have you done to support children prior to this election?

As an attorney I have worked with Judges, Prosecutors and DHS to ensure our children are safe and they get the services they need while under the supervision of DHS. We need to work diligently to keep families intact and see that the children of this state get everything they need to succeed.

I am a member of Lions Club International. In our work with the Lions Club we help children get the eye care they need and to provide money for services. I make it a priority to see that children in our community get proper eye care. I am also a member of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association. The OCA sponsors programs for children to keep them involved with activities that teach them responsibility and the value of hard work.

What will you do to support families in your new role, if elected?

I believe that the Earned Income Tax Credit is very crucial for families with children. I will introduce legislation that will restore the EITC. We are spending more money on incarceration than we are public education. I have been a part of three drug court programs in this State. I know these programs work when they are properly administered. These diversion programs allow parent to be with their children and reduces Oklahoma’s growing prison population. I want to provide more funding for drug courts and like programs to reduce the incarceration rate so that parents can raise their children and the children do not become wards of the State.

What ideas do you have to better the lives of Oklahoma’s children?

Education, mental health, and poverty need to be addressed seriously by our state. Our families need support to help our children succeed. In order for children to learn, their basic needs must be met. Those needs include food, shelter and safety. Then we must make sure their emotional and mental health needs are met. Only after that, can we address their education needs. We must have an educated society to thrive.

What have you done to support children prior to this election?

I am an educator. I support children and their physical, mental, and emotional health daily by championing for them and addressing these needs. Unfortunately, I can only do this on the ground level as one person. We need state assistance including funding for increased mental health care and social workers in schools.

What will you do to support families in your new role, if elected?

I would work to ensure that families have access to adequate physical, mental, and emotional care. Criminal justice reform is vital to help keep families intact. If parents we able to learn a skill for a meaningful job and coping mechanisms to deal with life’s struggles instead of being imprisoned for minor offenses, children would be far better off than if placed in the ever-growing foster system.
