Liz George

What ideas do you have to better the lives of Oklahoma’s children?

We have to prioritize public education. Especially in rural Oklahoma, our schools step in to cover the gap in services which are otherwise unavailable in our district, from food and clothing to mental health. We also must continue to work on criminal justice reform. As a volunteer attorney for Oklahoma Lawyers for Children (“OLFC”), too many children end up stuck in foster care due to one or more parents being incarcerated. We have to provide resources for these families and children to find ways to grow up together as strong healthy families. I am also working on training as an education guardian ad litem through OLFC so I can serve as a guardian on education issues for kids in the foster system struggling at school who need a voice and a mentor.

What have you done to support children prior to this election?

I have served on the Blanchard school board since February of 2017. I am a volunteer attorney with Oklahoma Lawyers for Children where I represent children in deprived cases where the kiddos are in DHS custody. I serve on the board of directors for the YWCA of OKC where we serve families escaping domestic violence situations. Bettering the lives of children IS the reason I am running.

What will you do to support families in your new role, if elected?

I will do EVERYTHING within my power to promote legislation that supports Oklahoma families and I will fight hard against legislation that hurts them. I will use this platform to shed light on the issues facing Oklahoma families and spread awareness so we can continue to engage the public on these issues. I will work closely with organizations like OICA to understand, develop, promote and pass effective legislation benefiting Oklahoma families. I will continue to support criminal justice reform, restoration of the earned income tax credit, and will fight for adequate funding for the programs critical to Oklahoma children such as public education, foster care, developmental disabilities services, child care programs, healthcare, and others.
