What ideas do you have to better the lives of Oklahoma’s children?
We must lower the number of ACE’s in children’s lives. Many kids are simply broken by the time they are of child-bearing age and tend to replicate behaviors exhibited toward them. Lowering the number of ACEs is difficult since destructive behavior tends to replicate through socialization and the effects ACEs. We need a strong emphasis on supporting mental health treatment for parents and children. We need to emphasize education and parental training for those identified as at-risk. We need to fund DHA/CPS to do their job.
What have you done to support children prior to this election?
Participate yearly in the Food4Kids program in my local community. Book readings with PreK students with the Potts Family Foundation. Support other local agencies (United Way, Women’s Haven, Gabriels House, various Rotary literacy, clean water projects, polio immunization) that deal directly with children and their needs.
What will you do to support families in your new role, if elected?
I recognize there are problems with our families. Most people think of all other families being like their family. This is not the case. Some children and families live in horrid conditions, are hungry, are abused, are hopeless and are forgotten. We can’t continue to put our blinders on and walk through life without confronting the atrocities some families experience. I will continue to author and push policies that support children and families. I have a record of being pro-family.
