May is National Foster Care month. A month in which we celebrate families who have opened their hearts and homes to children and those who have dedicated their life’s work to serving children and youth in state care.
This year OICA has worked with DHS, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and many additional partners, to advocate for foster care reform. We have successfully lobbied for and passed bills like SB 727, SB 748, and SB 717 which were introduced to better protect children in child care facilities, improve communication between DHS and parents and children, and boost the socioeconomic well-being of children in state care.
Still, Oklahoma has over 10,000 children in foster care. There is still much work to be done. In acknowledgment of these children, OICA has set a goal of $10,000 to be raised in order to continue the work of ending systemic barriers for children and families, working on legislation to keep families together, and to place vulnerable children in loving homes. Please consider making a donation this month.
The 2017 Foster Walk is an exciting event coming up June 3rd sponsored by the Oklahoma Chapter of the Foster Care Alumni of America (FCAA-OK). It will be held at the Oklahoma State Capitol from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness and support for foster youth and alumni of foster care across the country.
